Police issue traffic warning ahead of Armed Forces Day celebrations

Traffic delays and large crowds are expected

An air show is planned as part of the celebrations

Police have issued a traffic warning ahead of the Armed Forces Day celebrations in Co Antrim this weekend.

A number of events are taking place to mark the day in Newtownabbey, with air show displays and live demonstrations being carried out throughout Saturday June 22.

Thousands of people are expected to turn out for the event, which is hosted by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council.

The Shore Road will be closed to traffic in both directions between Station Road and Shore Avenue from 9.30am – 5pm, with strict access for residents only.

A planned parade will begin at 11am from Whiteabbey War Memorial to Jordanstown Loughshore Park Road, before the Red Arrows Airshow display takes place from 12 noon until approximately 12.25pm.

During this time, a temporary restricted airspace order will be in place from 11.50-12.45pm.

Disruption to traffic is very likely in and around the town centre, and those planning to attend the event are urged to arrive early.

Signposted diversions will be in place, and park and ride facilities will be operating, please visit https://antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk/residents/community-initiatives/armed-forces-day-2024/ for more information.

Local officers will be on the ground to assist with diversions in place, to ensure the safety of those participating and spectating.

The public have been warned that if they do not plan on attending the event, they should seek an alternative route for their journey.
