Five deaths on Irish roads after weekend crashes

Five people have died following weekend road crashes in the Republic of Ireland.

One man in his 20s died following a single-vehicle road crash on the R161 between Trim and Navan in County Meath at about 22:00 local time on Sunday evening.

Gardaí (Irish police) said the man was brought to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, where he was later pronounced dead.

The road is closed for a technical examination with local diversions in place.

Earlier on Sunday, two men in their 30s died following a three-vehicle road collision in Oldcastle, County Meath.

It involved motorcycles and happened on the R195 road at Bellaney at about 16:40 local time.

Two other men were injured, one of them seriously.

The other man’s injuries have been described as “non-life-threatening at this time”.

A 14-year-old boy also died following a collision involving an e-scooter and car in County Kilkenny on Saturday evening.

The boy, who had been travelling on the e-scooter, was transferred to St Luke’s Hospital in Kilkenny, where he later died from his injuries.

In Cork, a 40-year-old man died in a road crash near Kinsale on Saturday morning.

The single-vehicle crash happened at Ballynamona, outside Kinsale, at about 01:30 local time.

The weekend fatalities bring the number of road deaths in the Republic of Ireland to 113 so far this year.
