Ireland player ratings – another night to forget for Boys in Green

The Liverpool ’keeper will be disappointed with his positioning for the Greek opener. Comfortable with the ball at his feet. Didn’t have a whole lot else to do bar a late save to deny Lazaros Rota.

Andrew Omobamidele 7

Came in for his 10th cap but picked up a cheap booking early on. Put in a few brave challenges though, most notably on 40 minutes. A good shift before being replaced by Matt Doherty.

Nathan Collins 6

The captain kept Fotis Ioannidis quiet in the first half but should have stepped closer when the Greek striker found the top corner on 50 minutes. Tried in vain to block Christos Tzolis’ late strike.

Dara O’Shea 6

Made a key intervention on 34 minutes to clear to safety and showed his aerial prowess with some key headed clearances. Couldn’t get out to Ioannidis quickly enough for Greece’s first goal.

Robbie Brady 6

Operated at left-back and had a better night than Saturday. Set-piece deliveries were good and showed his passing qualities on his 66th cap. Did his defensive duties too.

Alan Browne 6

Sat in the No 6 role with Molumby and should have really hit the target on 44 minutes. Had a busy second half too and made a key block to deny Greek skipper Tasos Bakasetas.

Jayson Molumby 7

A strong first half from the midfielder who showed his fine passing range. Much better showing than Saturday but appeared frustrated coming off as Evan Ferguson was introduced.

Chiedozie Ogbene 6

Saw his wonder strike flagged offside before the break and did well to lay it on a plate for Browne afterwards. Worked tirelessly but disappointing in the final third. Made way for Callum Robinson.

Will Smallbone 7

A clever through ball early on put Knight in on goal and linked up brilliantly with Ogbene on 44 minutes to create a chance. A solid night.

Jason Knight 7

Energetic shift from the Bristol City captain. Great work on 22 minutes to set up Browne. Worked hard and pressed high before making way for Leicester City winger Kasey McAteer.

Sammie Szmodics 6

Moved into a central striking role here. Ran hard in the first half but chances were few and far between overall as he was replaced by Adam Idah.

Bench Impact 5

Evan Ferguson (63 minutes) was introduced while Kasey McAteer (74) earned his second cap. Matt Doherty (74) also came on but was poor for Greece’s second. Adam Idah (84) and Callum Robinson (84) made late cameos, with the latter’s deflected effort going close to making it 1-1.

Manager — Heimir Hallgrimsson 5

Three changes from the England defeat and switched to a back four. An improved first half but a poor second. Ireland’s Achilles heel of conceding after the restart remains. After two defeats, this campaign is an uphill battle now.
