Republic of Ireland soccer star ‘pulled from burning car’ after crash near Kerry-Limerick border

The Shamrock Rovers ladies player, who is from Listowel, was one of three people injured in the crash that occurred on the Kerry-Limerick county bounds – near Tarbert just inside Co Limerick – shortly after 8pm.

The Kerryman understands McCarthy, who has been capped ten times for Ireland, was pulled from the vehicle by locals as it became engulfed in flames following the two-car collision.

It is understood that McCarthy (27) was in one of the vehicles and that the other vehicle, an SUV, was occupied by two people, who were also injured.

McCarthy and the two males who were travelling in the second vehicle were all taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.

A talented Gaelic footballer in her youth, McCarthy played for Kerry up to minor level before deciding to concentrate on soccer with Listowel Celtic.

The current Shamrock Rovers Player has made 10 appearances for the club this year so far.

The talented player has been capped 10 times by Republic of Ireland and had been due to play in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup for Ireland but was ruled out by injury at that time.

She spent time with Glasgow City where she helped the club secure a consecutive 11th league title.

She returned to Ireland and signed for Cork City in 2018, winning Player of the Year in her first season. She then re-joined Galway WFC where she spent 3 years before moving to Tallaght in 2023.

In a statement to The Kerryman, a spokesperson for the Garda Press Office said gardaí attended the scene of a two-vehicle road traffic collision which occurred on Sunday last, October 6 at around 8.15pm on the Kerry Limerick bounds close to Tarbert on the N69 at Glin, Limerick.

Gardaí appealed for witnesses.

“Any road users or pedestrians who were in the area at the time between 7.45pm and 8.15pm and have camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this available to investigating Gardaí.”
