Republic of Ireland v Greece Match Preview

Had it not been for some second-half heroics by Irish goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher on Saturday afternoon, Ireland could well have been staring down the barrel of a shellacking against England.

The hosts didn’t really threaten England in Hallgrímsson’s first game in charge and will already feel the pressure of getting something against Greece in what will be their second home game of the Nations League.

Greece impressed under Ivan Jovanovic and some of his braver calls in selection turned out to be correct ones as they romped to a 3-0 home win against Iceland.

Greece have lost just two of their last 10 matches inside 90 minutes, and considering these were against Netherlands twice and Germany, there is enough to suggest that they are turning into a pretty robust outfit.

It’s a bedding in period for both sides, but Greece have developed a knack recently of not losing against sides that are around their level.

The 2004 European Champions have gone unbeaten against the likes of Finland, Malta, Kazakhstan, France, New Zealand, Gibraltar, Lithuania and Kosovo over the past couple of years, and also hold a 2-0 win over Republic of Ireland from the Aviva Stadium in October last year in a Euro’s qualifier.

Panathinaikos striker Fotis Ioannidis was a surprise inclusion in Saturday’s game but answered any critics by netting a brace – all eyes will be on the 24-year-old again in the Irish capital.
