Ireland manager shares update on Everton’s Seamus Coleman after latest injury vs England

Everton’s start to the season has been less than ideal, but the international break promised a chance for a refresh when the Premier League rolls back around.

After all, for those in form it has the potential to kill all momentum, and for those struggling, as the Toffees are, they can return renewed.

However, extra football always poses additional risks, particularly with injuries.

And, with how Seamus Coleman has fared for the Republic of Ireland over the years, any time he pulls on his national team’s shirt Evertonians fear the worst.

Most will still remember the harrowing leg break suffered in 2017 that still arguably hampers him to this day.

So, seeing him once again left in a heap last night whilst facing England, it felt like Deja Vu.

At last, a much-needed update on his fitness has been dropped.

Seamus Coleman injury update

Although his response was rather short, it was BBC Sport who delivered this key update which suggests that the 35-year-old will finally be afforded some rest.

All it took was Harry Maguire to rake his boot down Coleman’s Achilles, pulling his boot off and cutting a huge hole in his sock.

Fears were only emphasised when the stretcher was brought out, but in the end, the veteran defender managed to pick himself up and hobble off the pitch of his own volition, a positive sign at least.

Alas, Heimir Hallgrímsson, the Republic of Ireland manager, saw his one-word response reported as such: Ahead of Tuesday’s game with Greece, Halgrimsson has said that Seamus Coleman, who was forced off in the second half, is “unlikely” to feature in the second match of the Nations League.’

Everton missed out on right-backs during the transfer window

After this latest blow in the right-back position, it is worth combing over all of Everton’s attempted transfers throughout the summer to rectify this area.

Clearly Kevin Thelwell knew it needed fixing, which makes his decision to leave it until the last minute all the more baffling.

Everton tried to sign Kieran Trippier from Newcastle United as their chief target, given his connection with Sean Dyche, but in the end he remained on Tyneside.

So, attention then turned to another player with Premier League experience, trying to tempt former Burnley loanee Lorenz Assignon to Goodison Park too.

That did not materialise into a move, and neither did their attempts to sign Jackson Tchatchoua too.

They even saw a late bid rejected for his services before the window closed.
