Liverpool player suggests Anfield exit likely

Caoimhin Kelleher has suggested an exit from Liverpool is likely as the goalkeeper looks to secure regular first-team football.

Kelleher was linked with leaving Liverpool in the summer but no transfer materialised for the Republic of Ireland international.

The 25-year-old has spent the last few seasons in a supporting role for Alisson Becker,  though impressed in the latter’s absence through injury in 2023/24.

Kelleher made 26 appearances in all competitions last season and was a crucial part of the Reds’ success in the League Cup, with an outstanding final appearance against Chelsea at Wembley.

Despite his progress, Liverpool agreed a £30m deal to sign Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili in the summer.

The 23-year-old will link up with Liverpool from Spanish side Valencia in 2025 and Kelleher has said that decision has suggested he will need to leave Anfield for a regular role.

Kelleher, who has cemented his place as number one for the national team, has insisted he is good enough to command first-choice status at club level.

“I made it clear in the last few years that I want to go somewhere and be a number one,” Kelleher said at a press conference ahead of the Republic of Ireland’s Nations League fixture with Greece.

“The club has made that decision to get a goalkeeper (Mamardashvili) which makes it look like they’ve made a decision to go in another direction.

“Liverpool have rejected a few bids as well. It’s not always in my hands to fully make the decision. My ambition is clear. I’m good enough and I want to go and play week in, week out.”
