Newcastle United duo Anthony Gordon and Nick Pope arrive for England duty in comical fashion

There are three Newcastle United players in the England squad for this month’s Nations League games.

Lee Carsley has named his first squad as interim England manager, as he takes temporary charge of the Three Lions following Gareth Southgate’s departure.

Eddie Howe is a contender for the England job, but this is a chance for Carsley to prove that he should get the role.

He has picked a very different England squad, and it includes three Newcastle United players.

Anthony Gordon retains his place in the squad after Euro 2024, while Nick Pope is back for the first time since the 2022 World Cup. There is also a debut callup for Tino Livramento, who could be taking Kieran Trippier’s place at international level as well as domestically.

Newcastle players arrive for England training camp

England face Republic of Ireland on Saturday, and are training at St George’s Park ahead of that game.

The group reported for duty on Tuesday, with Livramento, Gordon and Pope making the journey from Tyneside.

The latter two travelled together, and there was something rather amusing about their arrival at St George’s Park.

England’s official YouTube channel have uploaded a video of the players arriving, and they show Gordon and Pope saying their hellos.

Both players have their luggage, while they also have a black bin bag each!

Gordon was asked why he had a rubbish bag, replying: “Honestly, we need to sort it out. There’s no club bags!”

Chance for Anthony Gordon to build up his match fitness after Eddie Howe claim

Hopefully there is nothing rubbish about Gordon and Pope’s performances whilst on international duty…

For Gordon, this England camp is a chance for him to continue building up his match fitness.

It has been a slow start to the season for the 23-year-old, after performing so well last year.

Eddie Howe has admitted that Gordon is not quite fit enough yet, and has been trying to build up his fitness in Newcastle’s opening three Premier League games.

Despite not being his sharpest, Gordon has not struggled to create chances for his Newcastle teammates, and this England camp is a chance for him to represent his country and build up some momentum ahead of his return to St James’ Park.
