Hallgrimsson, who was joint head coach of his native Iceland when they stunned England at Euro 2016, reported no new injury worries for what is the Republic of Ireland’s first game since 11 June.

“I have learned a lot this week,” he said.

“We wish we would have had more time but we have to prioritise our time. I think after this camp I will have a lot more knowledge.”

Since Carsley – who was already without Jude Bellingham because of injury – named his 26-man squad for this game and next Tuesday’s match against Finland at Wembley, three players have been forced to withdraw due to illness or injury.

They are Cole Palmer, Phil Foden and Ollie Watkins.

Four players could make their senior England debuts over the course of the next few days, including Newcastle defender Tino Livramento, Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White, Lille’s Angel Gomes and Noni Madueke of Chelsea.
